X lost part of his "nose" in a sword duel against fellow Danish nobleman Manderup Parsberg. X had earlier quarrelled with Parsbjerg over the legitimacy of a mathematical formula, at a wedding dance at professor Lucas Bachmeister's house. Since neither had the resources to prove the other wrong, they ended up resolving the issue with a duel. Though the two later reconciled, the duel two days later, resulted in X losing the bridge of his nose. From this event X became interested in medicine and alchemy. For the rest of his life, he was said to have worn a replacement made of silver and gold, using a paste or glue to keep it attached. Named after an American cartoonist and inventor, X machine is a deliberately over-engineered machine that performs a very simple task in a very complex fashion, usually including a chain reaction. Over the years, the expression "X machine" has expanded to mean any confusing or complicated system. Despite security advice and warnings X went lobster-potting and tuna fishing in "The Shadow V" boat, which had been moored in the harbour at Mullaghmore. Thomas McMahon had slipped onto the unguarded boat that night and attached a radio-controlled bomb. When X was aboard en route to Donegal Bay, just a few hundred yards from the shore, the bomb was detonated. The boat was destroyed by the force of the blast. The origin of this phrase is not clear. Some say it is a stand-up comedian named Jordan Brady, who introduced it in an early 1990s stand-up show called The A-List.
