Despite security advice and warnings X went lobster-potting and tuna fishing in "The Shadow V" boat, which had been moored in the harbour at Mullaghmore. Thomas McMahon had slipped onto the unguarded boat that night and attached a radio-controlled bomb. When X was aboard en route to Donegal Bay, just a few hundred yards from the shore, the bomb was detonated. The boat was destroyed by the force of the blast. X, then aged 79, was pulled alive from the water by nearby fishermen, but died from his injuries before being brought to the shore. Baroness Braboune, Nicholas Knatchbull and Paul Maxwell were other victims of this mishap. Thomas McMahon was later sentenced to life in prison. Identify X.
