GREYCELL #32

Named after an American cartoonist and inventor, X machine is a deliberately over-engineered machine that performs a very simple task in a very complex fashion, usually including a chain reaction. Over the years, the expression "X machine" has expanded to mean any confusing or complicated system. X's cartoons became well known for depicting complex devices that performed simple tasks in indirect, convoluted ways. The pic below shows "Professor Butts and the Self-Operating Napkin" by X. Identify X.
